Saving Energy on Data Centre Cooling

Wastage of energy will surely affect the economic status of any individual, society and by extension, the country. Managing a small data center helps you to save several thousands of dollars in the long run. You therefore need to follow those who have preceded you in achieving their financial goals and using all the modern technologies and practices to save energy in your data centre cooling

The first step when you want to save energy in your data center cooling is by simply turning off idle IT equipment. This is one of the areas that most of the energy is always used in a given set up and being keen on some of these equipment and devices will make you realize some great  decrement in terms of the energy consumption rates. If you have an IT system that is known to host one or few rarely used PCs and devices, you would better turn in off until that convenient t time when you want to use the PC in question.

Virtualization of servers and storage devices is yet another method that you can employ to save energy in your data center cooling. This is in other words bringing about energy efficient cooling. It has been proven that any given device or machinery will use the same or almost the same amount of energy whether it is under used or it is carrying its optimum load. It is therefore not logical to have several servers and storage devices running at the same time yet they are under loaded. Bring all the PCs and connect them to the least possible number of storage facilities and servers. You are also advised to consolidate your servers in that if you have a big data centre with very many computers, you would better go for a single server or storage facility that can serve all the computers than going for single small servers.

Turning on the central processor unit’s power management features will also save you lots of money.  Energy efficient chipsets are being developed every now and then by chip developers. These are then installed in the computers but the user can decide whether to turn them on or not. It has been discovered that more than half the power required to operate a server is usually used by the computers. If you therefore turn on the power management features of your computers, you will save lots of cash in the long run.

Efficiency is yet another factor to be considered. Do not just buy any server as you will end up spending lots of money in the running costs. It is better you buy one server that is slightly more expensive than the other but cheap to run. There are servers that are more energy efficient than others and its prudent you go for such. This also applies to the Uninterrupted Power supplies you are using.

Eco-cooling is yet another factor that will save you a fortune. You can either use air evaporative cooling or even blanking panels for data centre ventilation among other methods of the likes to save energy that’s wasted.
